about

I believe that the sound of the koto reaches its full potential through subtlety, space, decay and the imperfections found in quiet playing. Although the pieces selected for this album are technically demanding, the sensitivity and care taken in the writing has freed me to bring these elements to the foreground. This is something I have been looking for in contemporary composition for the koto for a long time - the result is simple and beautiful, yet complex and intriguing below the surface.
As the koto becomes more visible in Western contemporary music, I wanted to present its sound in a way that is informed by singer-songwriters, bedroom beat makers and a new rise of DIY culture in modern music. The production of this album embraces the roughness and vulnerability in sound that exists in that specific mode of music-making. For me, this is equally a part of the musical expression and artistic direction that I’ve chosen to put a spotlight on in this album. It is just as much for the person walking to the train station with a set of headphones under their hoodie, as it is for anybody else.
